Born and raised in The Orkney Islands, Jimmy moved to Glasgow to study photography in 1991. After being in bands and involving himself in the art school music scene, he moved to London in 1995. After a few years working as a session guitarist, Jimmy put together his first studio in Kilburn and began collaborating.  His early work as a writer and producer included, Amy Winehouse, Half Cousin, Sia, Paolo Nutini, Duffy and Tina Turner. “I was working on instinct more than anything else - my motivation was to find artists who had individualism, expression and a chance that their music would be listened to much further down the line.”

In 2015, Jimmy took over West Heath Yard studios in West Hampstead, London from Edwyn Collins. Rebuilt and renamed Hoxa Headquarters, the studio is now home to all Jimmy’s writing and production. “Hoxa was an opportunity to build a studio around my working practice and to house all the equipment I’d amassed over the years. The studio is a reflection of my musical taste in that sense”.

More recently, Jimmy co-wrote, co- produced, engineered and mixed the latest Anohni and the Johnsons record - My Back Was a Bridge For You to Cross.
